BARLEY, the forgotten & ignored grain from Tibb-e-Nabawi
Barley is indeed a blessed and noble grain, specially chosen by the Almighty Allah for His beloved Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, the most honored and purest of creation. The blessed Barley holds a distinguished status, not only in the sight of Allah but also in the realm of nutrition, as it possesses one of the lowest glycemic indexes among all grains, making it beneficial for the health and well-being. When consumed along with its protective outer chaff/husk, barley becomes a supreme source of nourishment, containing the highest amounts of dietary fiber; both soluble and insoluble. This abundant fiber content aids in digestion and purification of the body, a testament to the divine wisdom embedded in the foods of our beloved Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم. Thus, barley is not just a sustenance for the body, but also a means of following the Prophetic tradition and honoring the blessings bestowed by Allah upon His Messenger.
Barley is repeated again & again in various Tibb-e-Nabawi foods, the blessed Barley bread itself, Thareed, Saweeq drink (Sattu), Talbinah, Hasaa, Barley Water, Barley soups, & Hais with barley’s Saweeq & dates. We eat & drink Barley with a BLIND TRUST.
Unfortunately, Barley is the least adopted by Muslims, even those who make Talbinah select the pearl barley which is the wrong method. Some Muslims make Thareed with wheat bread, again a false choice, Thareed is made only with the blessed ~ whole Barley bread.
So, with Tibb-e-Nabawi diet, we shall train you for how to use the Whole barley in various foods Insha'Allah.
You should know that unlike wheat & other grains which are hot & mildly moist in nature, the blessed Barley is cold & dry natured.
Have you ever thought that if a wheat bread dough with 100 gm of wheat flour needs 60-65 ml of water for kneading, why the blessed Barley bread dough with 100 gm of flour will need 100 ml of water ?
Barley is one of the richest foods in Beta-glucan, with its content as 3-11% in dry weight.
Beta-glucan has been shown to help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels by binding to bile acids in the digestive system and removing them from the body. This process can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Some studies suggest that beta-glucan may help reduce blood pressure by improving vascular function and decreasing cholesterol levels. Beta-glucan enhances the activity of immune cells, such as macrophages, neutrophils, and natural killer cells, which help the body fight off infections. It has been shown to improve the body's ability to respond to bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. Beta-glucan can help reduce inflammation, which is a key factor in many chronic diseases, including arthritis, heart disease, and autoimmune conditions. Beta-glucan can help regulate blood sugar levels by improving insulin sensitivity. This is beneficial for individuals with Type 2 diabetes or those at risk for the condition. Beta-glucan slows down the absorption of glucose from the intestines, which helps in preventing blood sugar spikes after meals. Beta-glucan acts as a prebiotic, promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. This can improve overall digestive health, reduce bloating, and enhance nutrient absorption. As a fiber, beta-glucan helps increase stool bulk and promotes regular bowel movements, reducing the risk of constipation. Beta-glucan can increase feelings of fullness (satiety), helping to control appetite and reduce overall calorie intake, which may assist in weight management or weight loss efforts. Some studies show that beta-glucan helps reduce triglyceride levels, further contributing to improved cardiovascular health. There is some evidence suggesting that beta-glucan may have potential anti-cancer properties, primarily through its immune-boosting effects. It has been studied for its potential to stimulate immune responses that could help in the fight against cancer. Beta-glucan may help promote wound healing and skin regeneration, and it is sometimes used in skincare products for its anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties.
By including foods rich in beta-glucan in your diet, you can experience these benefits, improving your overall health and well-being.
