Kohl Ithmid (Sulfide of Antimony)
Ibn al-Qayyim wrote : In Sunan Ibn Majah, it is narrated from Salim, from his father, who attributed it to the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : "Use Ithmid, for it brightens vision and promotes hair growth."
In Abu Nu`aym's book, it is said: "It promotes hair growth, removes debris, and purifies vision."
In Sunan Ibn Majah, it is also narrated from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), attributed to the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : "The best of your Kohl is Ithmid, for it brightens vision and promotes hair growth."
In Sunan Ibn Majah and other sources, it is narrated from Ibn Abbas Radi Allaho Anh who said: "The Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ had a Kohl container from which he applied Kohl three times to each eye." (Ibn Majah, Tirmidhi).
In Tirmidhi, it is narrated from Ibn Abbas Radi Allaho Anh: "When the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ applied Kohl, he would apply it three times to the right eye, starting and finishing with it, and twice to the left eye."
Applying Kohl preserves eye health, strengthens vision, clears it, removes harmful substances, and extracts impurities. Some types of Kohl also serve as adornment (Zeenah~beauty for the eyes). Kohl applied before sleep is especially beneficial, it and supports the eyes' natural function. Ithmid (antimony Kohl) has specific benefits in this regard.
Ithmid is a type of black Kohl stone, primarily sourced from Isfahan, which produces the finest quality. It is also brought from the Maghrib (Morocco) region. The best Ithmid is characterized by its ability to be easily crushed (fragmentizes quickly), producing shiny fragments with a smooth, clean interior free from impurities. Its temperament is cold and dry, and it benefits the eyes by strengthening and preserving their health. It fortifies the optic nerve, eliminates excess flesh in ulcers, helps heal them, cleanses the eyes of impurities, clears vision, and alleviates headaches when used as Kohl with diluted honey. When ground and mixed with fresh fat and applied to burns, it prevents the formation of scabs and aids in healing blisters caused by burns. Ithmid is considered the best Kohl for the eyes, particularly for the elderly and those with weakened eyesight, especially when combined with a small amount of musk."
Ithmid by Ibn al-Baytaar : It is a black Kohl (antimony) stone brought from Isfahan and western areas. It is a black, shiny, and reflective stone with a dark blue-black hue. The best antimony is the kind that, when crushed, produces shiny fragments. It should have layered structures, be smooth on the inside, free of impurities, and crumble easily. This substance has a general drying property with astringent effects. For this reason, it is included in eye salves and other dry medicines that benefit the eyes and reduce inflammations. The properties of antimony are cooling, astringent, and purifying. It removes excess tissue from ulcers, cleanses them, and heals their impurities. It also clears dirt from eye ulcers and stops nosebleeds originating from the membranes above the brain. When mixed with fresh fat and applied to burns, it prevents scabbing. When combined with beeswax, it heals ulcers that result in scabbing due to burns. It is beneficial for the eyes, strengthens the optic nerve, and protects the eyes from diseases and pain. However, if unaccustomed eyes are treated with it, they may experience irritation or inflammation initially. It is particularly helpful for the elderly and those whose vision has weakened with age when a small amount of musk is added.
Masarjawaih: It helps alleviate heat and moisture in the eyes when used as a Kohl.
Razi: It strengthens the eyes, preserves their health, and stops menstrual bleeding when used as a vaginal suppository.
Muhammad Ibn Al-Hassan: It is cold and dry in the fourth degree. When applied externally, it kills lice. When used as a Kohl, it reduces excessive tearing. Sprinkled as a powder on fresh wounds, it helps heal them, although it leaves a black stain.
Ibn-e-Sina wrote : Antimony (Ithmid) is the essence of dead lead ore (Asrab) and has properties similar to those of burnt lead. The best quality is shiny, with glimmering particles, free from impurities or dirt, and highly friable. Its temperament: Cold in the first degree and dry in the second. It is more drying than red vitriol (Syrian alum). It contracts, dries without causing irritation, and stops bleeding.
Wounds and Sores: It is beneficial for sores, removes excess flesh, heals wounds, and when mixed with fresh fat, prevents burns from ulcerating. If ulceration occurs, it heals it when mixed with wax and white lead (Asfidaj).
Head-related Benefits: Prevents cerebral nosebleeds caused by brain congestion.
Eye-related Benefits: Protects the health of the eyes and cleanses them of impurities caused by sores.
Reproductive Organs: When applied as a suppository, it helps with uterine bleeding.
