HENNA
Ibn al-Qayyam wrote : The Hadith mentioned in Sunan Ibn Majah states: “Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم would not be afflicted with a wound (lession) or a thorn (small puncture or cut caused by a thorn) without putting Henna on it.” Ibn al-Sunni and Abu Nu'aym also recorded from Abu Hurairah Radi Allao Anh that “when WAHEE (revelation) descended upon him, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم would experience a headache and would wrap his head with Henna.”
Narrated by Ibn Majah in a weak Hadith that whenever Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم suffered from a headache, he used to cover his head with Henna (Khazaab) and said, "Henna helps to relieve headache by the permission of Allah".
The treatment for migraines varies based on their types and causes. Some types are treated by purging (vomitting), others by consuming food, some by rest and relaxation, some by applying compresses, some by cooling, some by warming, and some by avoiding sounds and movement. With this understanding, treating headaches with Henna, as mentioned in the Hadith, is a specific remedy, not a general one, and is effective for certain types of headaches. When a headache is caused by intense heat and is not due to any harmful substance that needs to be expelled, Henna provides significant relief. If Henna is crushed and applied as a compress on the forehead with vinegar, it can relieve the headache. Henna has a calming effect on the nerves when used as a compress, easing their pain. This benefit is not limited to head pain but extends to other body parts as well. Henna also has a contracting quality that strengthens tissues, and when applied as a compress to areas with hot, inflamed swelling, it reduces the inflammation.
Al-Bukhari, and Abu Dawud in reported that whenever anyone complained of head pain to the Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم would say to them, “Perform Hijamah.” And if someone complained of pain in their legs, he would say, “Apply Henna Khazaab.”
In *Tirmidhi*, it is narrated from Salma, the servant of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, that she said, "Whenever Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم suffered from a sore or was pricked by a thorn, he would apply Henna to it."
Henna is cool in the first degree and dry in the second. The strength of the Henna plant and its branches is derived from a combination of a dispersing quality (due to its mildly warm, watery essence) and a contracting quality (from its cool, earthy essence). Some of the benefits of Henna include its ability to relieve burns. When applied as a compress, it has a calming effect on the nerves. Chewing Henna can help heal mouth sores and ulcers, and it can cure oral thrush that appears in children’s mouths. A Henna compress also soothes hot, inflamed swellings and acts similarly to a coagulant on wounds. When mixed with purified wax and rose oil, it is beneficial for alleviating pain in the sides of the body. One of its unique properties is that if a child is beginning to develop smallpox and the soles of his feet are covered with Henna, it can protect his eyes from being affected by the smallpox infection. This is a well-known, tried, and true remedy. Additionally, if the flowers of Henna are placed among woolen clothing, they impart a pleasant fragrance and protect the garments from moths.
When Henna leaves are soaked in fresh water until they are fully covered, then pressed, and the clear liquid is consumed daily for forty days (taking twenty dirhams of the extract with ten dirhams of sugar each day), and accompanied by a diet of young lamb meat, it is remarkably effective in preventing the onset of leprosy due to its unique properties.
It is also reported that a man whose fingernails were cracked and split tried various costly treatments without success. Then, a woman advised him to drink Henna for ten days. Initially hesitant, he soaked Henna in water and drank it, which healed him, and his nails returned to their natural appearance.
When Henna paste is applied to the nails, it beautifies and strengthens them. If mixed with clarified butter (ghee) and applied as a compress to hot, inflamed swellings that discharge yellow fluid, it helps significantly and is also beneficial for chronic, ulcerative scabies. Henna promotes hair growth, strengthens it, enhances its appearance, strengthens the scalp, and helps heal blisters and boils on the legs, feet, and other parts of the body.
Reported by Abu Hurairah Radi Allaho Anh that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said "Jews & Chiristians do not dye their hairs, so oppose them by applying the color (HENNA)."
Hennas was loved by Khulafa'-e-Rashideen, Abu Bakr & Umar Radi Allaho Anhuma.
Reported by Anas Radi Allaho Anh "Abu Bakr Radi Allaho Anh used to color his hairs by HENNA & KATAM, & Umar Radi Allaho Anh used to dye only with HENNA".
Imam Muhammad Ahmed Zahabi says that there are three essential factors for healing :
- Expulsion of fluids from the wounds
- Cessation of production (of any more fluids)
- Formation of healthy flesh (tissue granulation) to fill the gap created in the wound
Henna contains all these three factors and possesses very good healing properties.
Henna by Ibn al-Baytaar : Henna trees produce fragrant flowers called Faghiyah, which are clustered like bunches of coriander but with a more pleasant aroma. When the flowers fall, they leave behind small, grayish seeds smaller than black peppercorns. The flowers, specifically referred to as Faghiyah, are distinctly fragrant, red, and aromatic. Henna is ground from its leaves, and the plant flowers twice a year, especially in the Arab lands. The leaves of the Henna tree resemble olive leaves but are broader, softer, and darker green. The plant produces white flowers with a pleasant scent and black seeds. The primary usable parts of the Henna tree are its leaves and twigs. Henna has dual properties: (1). Warming and dissolving due to its water-like hot essence. (2). Astringent due to its cold, earthy component.
Boiled Henna water can be applied to burns and is useful for treating inflamed swellings and ulcers, particularly those in the mouth (canker sores). It also benefits children suffering from oral thrush (candidiasis).
Chewing leaves: Treats mouth ulcers and oral sores.
Poultice: Reduces hot swellings.
Burn Treatment: Boiled water from Henna leaves can be applied to burns. Furthermore, Henna leaves paste with coriander water soothes burns.
Hair Dye: Leaves soaked and applied to hair impart a reddish tint.
Headache Relief: Crushed flowers mixed with vinegar and applied to the forehead alleviate headaches.
Cosmetic Uses: Mixed with oils or wax, Henna cleanses the face and reduces discoloration beneath the eyes.
Spleen Swelling: Henna powder mixed with natron and used as a poultice reduces spleen swelling.
Uterine Pain: Women sitting in Henna decoction benefit from uterine pain and contraction relief.
Skin and Hair: Washing hair with Henna water strengthens it and treats dandruff.
Chickenpox Protection: Applying Henna to a child's lower legs prevents chickenpox from affecting the eyes.
Skin Conditions: Henna paste treats dryness and cracks on the skin.
Brain Health: Henna seeds consumed with honey improve brain function and alleviate symptoms caused by heat and moisture.
Hair Health: Promotes hair growth and improves texture when applied with oil or as a Khazaab.
Child Scalp Issues: Mixed with black tar and oil, Henna treats scalp ulcers in children.
Fragrance: Henna flowers stored with woolen clothes keep them fragrant and protect against moths.
Masarjawaih: Henna decoction curls hair, treats scalp conditions, and soothes the chest while nourishing the lungs.
Ibn Masawaih: Drinking Henna water aids in regular menstrual flow when mixed with madder root.
Al-Tabari: Ground Henna applied to soft, hot swellings provides relief.
Ibn Ridwan: A trusted individual witnessed a man with clawed fingernails regain healthy nails after drinking Henna water for several days.
Ibn Zuhr: Henna paste applied to nails improves their appearance and strengthens them.
Al-Sharif: Drinking Henna water daily with sugar prevents the onset of leprosy if used continuously for 40 days.
Henna (حناء) by Dawood Antaaki: Fresh and pure henna is the best. Its potency diminishes after four years. Some consider it warm in the first degree, while others argue it is cold due to its dual essence. Some claim it is balanced and dry in the second degree. Among dyes, henna has the fastest absorption. When applied to the hands or feet, a green colored urine is observed, thereby removing impurities & expelling heat and opening blockages.
Boils and Skin Conditions: Its decoction or powdered form is highly effective in removing boils and ulcers of various types.
Kidneys & liver : Henna water opens blockages, treats jaundice, reduces spleen swelling, dissolves kidney stones, and acts as a diuretic.
Respiratory and Head Conditions: Drinking a mixture of one Mithqal (4.25 grams) of its flowers with three ounces of water and honey alleviates colds, headaches, and excessive moisture. Applied to the forehead with vinegar, it relieves headaches.
Pain Relief: Combined with ghee and rose oil, it soothes side and joint pain, whether from flowers or other parts.
Skin and Hair: With ghee, it treats chronic scabies, clears scars, and heals wounds better than other herbs. It soothes head sores, improves hair, especially when used with coriander water, and rejuvenates the body when massaged weekly.
Leprosy Treatment: Soaking one ounce of henna leaves in 20 ounces of water, boiling until only five remain, and adding one ounce of sugar creates a remedy for leprosy. If used consistently for a month without success, healing is considered divinely prevented.
Chickenpox Prevention: A paste made from rose water, a little safflower, and saffron applied to the soles of the feet at the onset of chickenpox protects the eyes.
Miscellaneous: Henna flower oil benefits the body, though it may irritate the throat and lungs unless combined with tragacanth (Goond Katira). Henna improves fragrance, increases vitality, and is considered the master of dyes. It is mentioned in the sayings of Abu Rafi' as enhancing aroma and intimacy. Anas narrated its role in soothing dizziness and enhancing fragrance, which is accurate. Its flowers prevent moth damage to wool.
Ibn-e-Sina wrote: Henna is a tree with leaves resembling olive leaves, but they are broader, softer, and greener. It has white flowers that resemble lichens and have a pleasant fragrance. Its seeds are black, and it is often imported from hot climates. Henna is cold in the first degree and dry in the second. Henna has a softening, constricting, and drying effect without causing harm. It is a natural dissolver, helping to open the veins and ease the flow of blood. Its oil has a warming, softening, and very relaxing quality.
Cosmetic Use: Henna Khazaab can be applied to the hair to give it a reddish color.
Tumors and Pimples: Its decoction is effective for hot and phlegmatic tumors, as well as for drying and reducing swelling in conditions like rabbit tumors.
Wounds and Sores: Henna's decoction is useful for treating burns, particularly from fire. It has been said to have the same effect as the blood of two brothers when applied to wounds. It can also be used on broken bones, either alone or in a poultice.
Joint Issues: Henna helps with nerve pain and is included in ointments for paralysis and muscle strain. Its oil works to ease fatigue, relax the nerves, and is effective for bone fractures.
Head: Henna can be applied to the forehead with vinegar for headaches, and it is also useful for treating mouth sores and thrush.
Chest Area: Henna is beneficial for chest congestion and is used in ointments for throat conditions.
Reproductive Organs: It is helpful for relieving uterine pain.
Faghiyah (Henna Blossom)
Faghiyah refers to the flower of the henna plant and is considered one of the most fragrant herbs. Al-Bayhaqi narrated in his book Shu'ab al-Iman from Abdullah ibn Buraidah, who reported from his father (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophetصلى الله عليه وسلم said: "The master of fragrant herbs in this world and the Hereafter is Faghiyah." It is also narrated from Anas ibn Malik Radi Allaho Anh that he said: "The most beloved fragrant herb to the Messenger of Allahصلى الله عليه وسلم was Faghiyah." However, the authenticity of these narrations is not confirmed, and it cannot be definitively attributed to the Prophetصلى الله عليه وسلم without verified evidence. Faghiyah is moderate in heat and dryness and has mild astringent properties. When placed between layers of woolen clothes, it protects them from moths. It is also used in ointments for treating paralysis and muscle stiffness. The oil extracted from Faghiyah helps to relieve tension in the body and soften the nerves.
