Prophet’s Guidance on treating pain in general with Islamic Prayer formulas
It is narrated in Sahih Muslim from Uthman ibn Abi al-Aas that he complained to the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم about a pain he had been feeling in his body since he embraced Islam. Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم instructed him: "Place your hand on the part of your body that hurts and say, 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) three times, then say seven times: 'I seek refuge in the Might and power of Allah from the evil of what I feel and what I fear.'
In this method of treatment, there is a reliance on the remembrance of Allah, entrusting the matter to Him, and seeking refuge in His Might and Power from the harm of pain. This can lead to the alleviation of the pain. The repetition of the recitation is to make it more effective, much like how medicine is repeated to remove the harmful substance. There is also a special significance in the number seven that is not found in other numbers.
In Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, it is narrated that Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to make Ruqyah for some of his family members. He would place his right hand on the affected area and say: "O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the suffering, heal, for You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind."
In this Ruqyah, there is an appeal to Allah through His perfect Lordship and Mercy in healing, affirming that He alone is the Healer, and that no healing can occur except by His will. The supplication also includes an appeal to Allah’s oneness and His benevolence as the ultimate Lord and Sustainer.
