Balah (Fresh Dates)
Ibn Al Qayyim wrote for Fresh Dates - Balah: It is narrated in Sunan an-Nasa'i and Sunan Ibn Majah from Hisham ibn Urwah, from his father, from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Eat fresh dates (Balah) with dried dates (Tamr), for when Sheytaan sees the son of Adam eating fresh dates with dried ones, he says: 'The son of Adam has lived until he eats the new with the old.'" In another narration: "Eat fresh dates with dried ones, for Satan becomes sorrowful when he sees the son of Adam eating them, saying: 'The son of Adam has lived long enough to eat the new with the old.'" This was narrated by al-Bazzar in his Musnad, and this is his wording.
The "ba" in the hadith means "with," i.e., eat this with that. Some Muslim physicians have said: Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم commanded eating fresh dates with dried dates, but not fresh unripe dates (Busr) with dried dates because Balah is cold and dry, while Tamr (dried dates) are hot and moist. Each one balances the effects of the other. This is not the case with Busr and Tamr, as both are hot, although the heat of Tamr is more intense. From a medical perspective, it is not advisable to combine two hot or two cold foods.
Fresh dates (Balah) are cold and dry. They are beneficial for the mouth, gums, and stomach, but they are rough on the chest and lungs, slow to digest, and provide limited nutrition. They are to the palm tree what sour grapes are to the grapevine. Both fresh dates and sour grapes generate gas, bloating, and intestinal noise, especially if water is consumed after them. These effects can be mitigated by consuming Tamr (dried dates), honey, or butter alongside them.
Ibn al-Baytaar wrote: Abu Hanifah states that when the immature fruit inside the date palm flower turns green and round, it is referred to as "Balah." It is believed that there is no Nabeez with a more pleasant fragrance than that derived from it. Women use it to make prayer beads because of its lovely scent, and it is involved in various types of perfumes, collectively known as "Balahiyat."
Ibn Masawayh: It is cold and dry in the second degree, beneficial for the stomach and gums, but harmful for the chest and lungs due to its roughness. It is slow to digest and provides a light, weak nourishment.
Ibn Sina: It can cause blockages in the liver, and excessive consumption may lead to thick mixtures in the stomach, increasing urination. Regular consumption can stop leprosy and enhance urine and milk production.
