HONEY
Ibn al-Qayyim wrote : Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم used to drink honey mixed with water on an empty stomach, highlighting a remarkable secret behind this practice for maintaining health. Only those with keen insight will fully appreciate this secret. We will revisit this topic when discussing the Prophet’s guidance on promoting good health.
A hadith reported by Ibn Majah and others states: علَيْكُم بالشِّفَاءَيْنِ: العَسَلِ والقُرآنِ
"Make use of the two cures: honey and the Quran."
This Hadith links physical and spiritual remedies, blending the medicine of the body with the healing of the soul, and combines earthly treatments with divine healing.
Honey possesses tremendous benefits, as it cleanses impurities in the blood vessels and intestines and is effective both as a food and a topical treatment. It is beneficial for the elderly and those with phlegm, particularly individuals with a cold and moist temperament. Honey nourishes and softens the body’s constitution, preserves the qualities of medicinal substances, neutralizes unpleasant tastes in medicines, purifies the liver and chest, promotes urination, and helps with coughs caused by phlegm.
When consumed hot with rose oil, it can help alleviate the bites of insects and the effects of opium. Taken alone and mixed with water, it is beneficial for dog bites and mushroom poisoning. If fresh meat is stored in honey, it can preserve its freshness for three months, and the same applies to cucumbers, melons, squashes, and eggplants. Many fruits can be preserved for six months in honey, and it is known to preserve the bodies of the deceased, earning it the title of "the faithful protector."
When applied to the body or hair, honey can kill lice and their eggs, promoting hair growth, improving their appearance, and softening them. Additionally, if used as an eye ointment, it can clear vision; when used as a mouthwash, it whitens and polishes teeth, promoting oral health. Honey opens blocked blood vessels and promotes menstruation. Licking honey on an empty stomach helps reduce phlegm, cleanses the stomach, and eliminates excess material, gently warming the stomach while clearing obstructions in the liver, kidneys, and bladder. It is less harmful for liver and spleen blockages than any other sweet substance.
Despite all these benefits, honey is generally safe with few adverse effects. It can cause issues for those with yellow bile, which can be mitigated by using vinegar or similar remedies. Under those conditions, honey becomes very beneficial.
Honey serves as nourishment alongside other foods, as medicine alongside treatments, as a drink alongside beverages, as the best sweetener alongside other sweets, as a coating for ointments, and as a delight among delights. Nothing in its category surpasses it, and it was the primary focus of the ancients, with many classical texts having no mention of sugar, which is a relatively recent development. Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم would often mix it with water for consumption on an empty stomach, a practice that holds profound secrets for health preservation that only the discerning can appreciate.
In "Sunan Ibn Majah," it is narrated from Abu Huraira Radi Allaho Anh that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "Whoever licks honey three mornings each month; will not be afflicted by a major calamity (fatal disease)." Another narration states: "You should take the two cures: Honey and the Quran." This combines earthly medicine with divine healing, addressing both physical and spiritual ailments. Ibn al-Baytaar wrote : The best honey is deep-colored, extremely sweet, with a slight sharpness on the tongue, fragrant, reddish in color, thick, and strong. When touched with a finger, it should stretch and return to the finger easily. Honey has warming and drying properties in the second degree. It is of a type that we refer to as "cleaning" due to its cleansing nature. If honey is cooked, it becomes less sharp and less cleansing, which makes it suitable for treating deep ulcers and fistulas. The best honey is reddish, clear, fragrant, and transparent enough for the eye to see through. It should have a sharp, delicious taste, and if you lift it with a finger, it should flow down but not break apart. If it breaks, it's either too thin or too thick. Thick honey is difficult to digest and less mature, while thin honey has more impurities. Honey with a strong, harsh smell is undesirable, but if the scent is mild, it is not harmful.
Honey has cleansing properties, opening the pores of veins and drawing out moisture. When poured onto deep, infected wounds, it benefits them, and when cooked and applied to cracked skin, it binds the cracks together. When mixed with fresh dill and applied to sores, it heals them. Mixed with powdered salt, honey can soothe ear inflammation and reduce swelling and pain. Honey also kills lice when applied to the hair. Pure Honey also helps to clear vision when applied and relieves sore throats when gargled or chewed. It can help with tonsillitis, difficulty swallowing, and acts as a diuretic when consumed with rose oil. It also benefits snake bites and black poppy juice poisoning. Honey can soothe coughs and act as a mild laxative, but only when the foam is removed, as unskimmed honey may cause bloating and coughing. The best honey is collected in spring, followed by summer honey, while winter honey is the lowest quality due to its thickness and reduced potency.
Al-Basri: Honey is quick to turn into bile, clearing phlegm, and is particularly beneficial for the elderly and those with cold temperaments. However, it is not ideal for individuals with hot constitutions, especially in summer. Honey has a cleansing quality, drawing moisture from the body, and is helpful for phlegmatic individuals. It softens the bowels and nourishes the body, though it may not be suitable for people with a bile-dominant constitution, especially those using thyme honey. Rose honey, on the other hand, is less heating and has a pleasant fragrance and taste. The best honey is sweet, reddish, slightly sharp, and fragrant, but not too runny or thick. Honey made from wormwood plants is especially beneficial for the liver and stomach, helping to open blockages and assist with dropsy. Honey made from thyme is also useful for opening blockages and preventing decay.
Raw honey is best for people with cold stomachs, swollen intestines, and stomach pain caused by phlegm. It also provides excellent nourishment.
Cooked honey is good for inducing vomiting and softening the bowels. It can be used to make someone vomit after consuming poisonous substances when mixed with sesame oil. However, honey water (a drink made from honeycomb) is not suitable for the sick due to the wax content, but it is a good drink for those who are healthy with strong stomachs.
Al-Razi in Al-Hawi: Honey is one of the best treatments for the gums and teeth. It cleans and polishes them, promoting the growth of gum tissue. Some people think honey softens the stomach and gums due to its sweetness, but only sweet substances that are inherently moist do this. Honey is dry by nature and only softens the gums if combined with another substance that also has astringent or drying properties, like myrrh or something similar.
In another section of the book, Al-Razi mentions that honey preserves dental health when mixed with vinegar and used as a mouthwash several times a month. If it is rubbed on the teeth with a finger, it cleans and whitens them, keeping them healthy.
Al-Sharif: When honey is mixed with rose oil and applied to wounds, ulcers, or other phlegmatic and salty sores, it heals them effectively. If applied to deep ulcers for three days along with Plantain (a medicinal herb), it cleanses and heals them.
The Two Experiments: Honey, when mixed with medications that enhance eyesight, sharpens vision. Gargling with it, or applying it to the mouth and throat, clears swollen tonsils and reduces inflammation. Honey is especially useful for cleaning wounds, solidifying ulcers, and softening tumors. When kneaded with fine wheat flour & applied as a poultice, it opens solid tumors, softens them, and absorbs any pus present. This mixture is also beneficial for treating ulcers that form on the back.
When honey is kneaded with ground fenugreek seeds, it promotes the growth of tissue in deep wounds. When mixed with bitter almonds, seeds of Mahlab, barley flour, or similar substances, and applied to the body, it induces sweating. Drinking honey with water clears the chest of any excess phlegm and can stimulate sexual desire when consumed regularly with water. Honey is one of the most effective remedies for people with paralysis or numbness. If consumed with water without skimming off the foam, it softens the bowels and increases sexual drive.
Honey can also cleanse ulcers, prepare the intestines for other treatments, and strengthen the effects of enemas when mixed with them. When used in treatments for vitiligo and leprosy, honey enhances the effects of the medications, making them more effective in clearing the skin.
Ibn-e-Sina wrote : Honey is a subtle dew that falls on flowers and other plants, which bees collect. It is a vapor that rises, matures in the air, thickens at night, and falls as honey. Honey can also be found naturally on the mountains. Its quality varies depending on the trees and stones it falls upon. Most of the visible honey is collected by people, while the hidden honey is gathered by bees. I believe that the processing by bees has an effect on it, as bees collect it to feed themselves and store it. There is also a spicy (acidic) type of honey.
Selection: The best honey is genuinely sweet, pleasantly aromatic, slightly spicy, reddish in color, thick, not runny, and viscous, with no breaks in consistency. Spring honey is considered the best, followed by summer honey, while winter honey is said to be of inferior quality.
Nature: Bee honey (collected from flowers) is warm and dry in the second degree, while tuberzod honey and cane honey (bees fed on sugar & sugarcane juice) are warm in the first degree.
Actions and Properties: Honey has a cleansing and opening effect on the vessels, dissolves moisture, draws fluids from the depths of the body, and prevents decay and spoilage in meat.
Beauty: Applying honey to the skin prevents lice and nits and kills them. When mixed with Qust (costus) (an aromatic root), it is particularly effective for chronic issues. With salt, it treats the scars left by bruises.
Wounds and Ulcers: Honey cleans dirty, deep wounds. When cooked until it thickens, it adheres to fresh wounds. If applied with dill, it cures scabies.
Head: When mixed with Andarani salt and dripped lukewarm into the ear, it cleans and dries any wounds, & strengthens hearing.
Eyes: Honey clears darkness from the eyes.
Throat: Gargling with honey or holding it in the mouth soothes sore throats and is beneficial for the tonsils.
Digestive System: Honey water strengthens the stomach and stimulates appetite.
Excretory System: Cane honey softens the bowels, while tuberzod honey does not. Unskimmed honey (with foam) causes bloating and loosens the bowels, but if skimmed, these effects are reduced. Cooked honey does not stimulate the bowels but may bind those with phlegmatic conditions, and it often induces sleep. Honey cooked with water promotes urination more effectively. We also say that honey and honey water, if able to reach the digestive system, can bind (counteract) poisons. If honey is drunk warm with rose oil, it helps treat insect bites, opium poisoning, dog bites, and ingestion of poisonous mushrooms. Cooked honey is beneficial for neutralizing poisons, and inducing vomiting with it helps cleanse the system.
