Prophet's guidance on treating wounds and cuts
Chapter on the Prophet’s Guidance in Treating Wounds
Ibn al-Qayyam wrote : In Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, Abu Hazim reported that he heard Sahl ibn Sa'd being asked about the treatment used for the wound of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم on the day of Uhud. He replied: “The Prophet’s face was wounded, his tooth was broken, and the helmet on his head was smashed. Fatimah Radi Allaho Anha, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم, washed the blood, while Ali Bin Abi Talib Radi Allaho Anh poured water over it using a shield. When Fatimah saw that the bleeding only increased, she took a piece of mat, burned it until it became ashes, and placed it on the wound, which then stopped the bleeding.” (This narration is found in Sahih al-Bukhari in the Book of Jihad and also in Sahih Muslim in the Book of Jihad. "His incisor" refers to the tooth located between the central incisor and the canine, and the plural is "incisors." One who loses an incisor is called a "Rubaa'," similar in form to the word "Thaman" (meaning “eight”). "Crushed" (هشمت) refers to breaking a hard object. "Helmet" (البيضة) refers to a helmet made of iron. "Shield" (المجن) is a shield or buckler.)
The ash used was from a mat made of papyrus, which has a strong drying effect and minimal irritation. Powerful drying medicines can cause blood to flow more by irritating the wound, but this ash does not. When blown into the nose, either alone or with vinegar, it stops nosebleeds. (Papyrus (البردي) is a plant from which mats are made. See Al-Misbah al-Munir for more details)
According to The Canon of Medicine, papyrus is effective in stopping bleeding and can be sprinkled on fresh wounds to promote healing. Ancient Egyptian paper was once made from it, and it has a cold and dry temperament. Its ash is beneficial for treating mouth ulcers, stopping spitting of blood, and preventing the spread of malignant ulcers.
NOTE : Although Ibn al-Qayyam wrote Papyrus for Haseer, in Arabian peninsula, usually the mats were made from thin woven palm leaves as they were easily available (يُصنع الحصير من نسيج رقيق من ورق النخيل), so it is a possibility that Haseer mentioned in Hadith was a mat made of palm leaves & Allah Knows the best. We have burnt the dried palm leaves & found out that their ashes have the same drying ability.
