Our beloved Prophet used three fingers while eating
Ibn al-Qayyam wrote : Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم would eat using his three fingers (thumb, forefinger & the middle finger), which is the most beneficial way of eating. Eating with one or two fingers does not allow the eater to fully enjoy the food, nor does it fill him except after a long time, as the digestive organs and stomach do not find satisfaction in the small amount received with each bite, so they reluctantly accept it, much like a person taking small portions, such as one or two grains. There is no pleasure or satisfaction in such a manner of eating.
On the other hand, eating with all five fingers and the palm causes the food to overcrowd the digestive organs and the stomach, which may even block them, possibly leading to death. The digestive organs resist this push, and the stomach struggles to handle it, resulting in no enjoyment or proper digestion.
Thus, the most beneficial way of eating is as Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم ate, and so do those who follow his example by using three fingers (thumb, forefinger & the middle finger).
