There is a hidden healing in the combination of spittle & dust' with Duaa of Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam.
Some believe that it was peculiar only to our beloved Prophet and was indeed his miracle because the particular dust was of Al-Madinah's soil with the Prophet's spittle being of a unique quality. But Hafiz Ibn Hajar Asqalani differs from this view. Spittle and dust, according to him, are simply external means and the curative effect in them comes from Allah Alone. It is for the entire Ummat-e-Muhammad & it can be used by all Muslims (with any soil / sand) living anywhere in the world.
Prophet's Guidance in treating ulcer and various wounds
It is recorded in both Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim from Aishah Radi Allaho Anha that whenever someone complained of an ailment, or had an ulcer or wound, the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم would place his forefinger on the ground, then lift it and say: "In the name of Allah, with the soil of our land, mixed with the saliva of some of us, our sick will be healed by the permission of our Lord."
This is a simple yet effective method of treatment, particularly beneficial for fresh wounds and ulcers, especially when other medicines are unavailable. The wisdom behind this treatment lies in the properties of pure soil, which is known to be cold and dry, making it suitable for drying out the moisture in wounds and ulcers. These moistures often hinder the body’s natural ability to heal quickly, especially in hot climates or for people with a hot temperament.
When such wounds and ulcers occur in hot conditions, the combination of the heat of the climate, the heat of the person's temperament, and the heat of the wound itself can worsen the problem. The cold, drying nature of pure soil helps balance this heat, especially if the soil has been cleaned and dried. Moreover, excess moisture and harmful fluids are common with such wounds, and soil, due to its drying nature, helps absorb this moisture and facilitate healing. Additionally, by balancing the temperament of the affected part, the body’s natural healing powers are strengthened, and the pain is alleviated by the will of Allah.
The meaning of the Hadith is that the person takes some of his saliva on his index finger, places it on the ground so that some soil sticks to it, and then applies it to the wound while reciting the mentioned words. This act carries the blessings of invoking Allah's name, entrusting the matter to Him, and relying on Him. The combination of both types of healings, physical and spiritual enhances the overall effectiveness of the treatment.
One can only imagine the healing potential of the most blessed and purest soil on earth, the soil of Madinah, especially when it is combined with the saliva of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم ~ his Ruqyah invoking the name of his Lord, and the entrustment of the matter to Him. But whoever performs this Ruqyah with his own saliva & the clean soil in his place of residence, it will definitely bring Shifa Insha’Allah.
