Prophet’s Guidance in treating the Namlah (Sores / Swellings / Numbness)
It has been mentioned in Sahih Muslim, in the narration of Anas, that Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم allowed the practice of Ruqyah for the sting, the evil eye, and for Namlah (a particular skin ailment).
In Sunan Abi Dawood, it is narrated by Ash-Shifa bint Abdullah that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم entered my house while I was with Hafsah & he said, "Why don't you teach her the Ruqyah (incantation) for the Namlah, just as you have taught her writing?"
Al-Namlah refers to skin pustules/sores that appear on the sides of the body. It is a well-known ailment, and it was named Namlah (meaning ant) because the person who suffers from it feels as though an ant is crawling and biting in that area.
Al-Khallal narrated that Shifa Bint Abdullah used to perform Ruqyah (incantation) during the pre-Islamic period for this ailment (Namlah). When she migrated to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم after having pledged her allegiance to him in Makkah, she said, "O Messenger of Allah! I used to perform Ruqyah during the pre-Islamic period for the Namlah. I would like to present it to you." She recited it before the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, and it was as follows: "In the name of Allah, may it vanish until it returns from where it came and does not harm anyone. O Allah, remove this affliction, Lord of the people." The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Recite this seven times on a stick, find a clean place, rub it on a stone with vinegar, and apply it to the Namlah."
This Hadith also provides evidence that it is permissible for women to learn writing.
