اللَّهُمَّ ثَبِّتْنِي أنْ أزِلَّ، وأهْدِني أنْ أضِلَّ
Barley's Hasaa' / Barley Water
There are some Ahadith in which the word TALBINAH is not used, but it was called Hasaa’ & it also has the same virtues as that of Talbinah :
وَعَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أَخَذَ أَهْلَهُ الْوَعْكُ أَمَرَ بِالْحَسَاءِ فصُنعَ ثمَّ أَمر فَحَسَوْا مِنْهُ وَكَانَ يَقُولُ: «إِنَّهُ لَيَرْتُو فُؤَادُ الحزين ويسرو عَن فؤاد السقيم كَمَا تسروا إِحْدَاكُنَّ الْوَسَخَ بِالْمَاءِ عَنْ وَجْهِهَا» . رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَقَالَ: هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ
A’ishah Radi Allaho Anha said that when his family were exhausted by fever, Allah’s messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم ordered some Hasaa’ to be prepared and then ordered them to sip some of it; and he used to say, “It strengthens the heart of a sad person and clears the heart of the invalid as one of you clears dirt away from her face with water.” (Tirmidhi transmitted it)
When Ibn Al-Qayyim discussed BARLEY in his book, he wrote:
شعير: روى ابن ماجه من حديث عائشة، قالت: كان رسول الله ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ إذا أخذ أحدًا من أهله الوعك، أمر بالحساء من الشعير، فصنع، ثم أمرهم فحسوا منه، ثم يقول: (إنه ليرتو فؤاد الحزين ويسرو فؤاد السقيم كما تسروا إحداكن الوسخ بالماء عن وجهها). ومعنى يرتوه يشده ويقويه. ويسرو، يكشف، ويزيل. وقد تقدم أن هذا هو ماء الشعير المغلي، وهو أكثر غذاء من سويقه، وهو نافع للسعال، وخشونة الحلق، صالح لقمع حدة الفضول، مدر للبول، جلاء لما في المعدة، قاطع للعطس، مطفئ للحرارة، وفيه قوة يجلو بها ويلطف ويحلل. وصفته أن يؤخذ من الشعير الجيد المرضوض مقدار، ومن الماء الصافي العذب خمسة أمثاله، ويلقى في قدر نظيف، ويطبخ بنار معتدلة إلى أن يبقى منه خمساه، ويصفى، ويستعمل منه مقدار الحاجة محلًا.
Narrated by Ibn Mājah: From the Hadith of A’ishah Radi Allaho Anha, she said: “Whenever someone from the family of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله علبه وسلم fell ill, he would command that barley soup (Hasaa' made from Barley) be prepared. Then it would be made, and he would instruct them to drink from it. Then he would say: ‘Indeed, it strengthens the heart of the sad and brings relief to the heart of the sick just as one of you removes dirt from her face with water.’”
وَمَعْنَى يَرْتُوهُ ~ The meaning of “yartūhu”: it strengthens and reinforces it, and وَيَسْرُو: يَكْشِفُ، وَيُزِيلُ ~ “yasru” means to unveil or remove.
This refers to boiled barley water, which is more nutritious than barley flour. It is beneficial for cough, soothing for the throat, helps reduce the intensity of excess bodily fluids, promotes urination, clears the stomach, quenches thirst, cools internal heat, and possesses a power that cleanses, softens, and dissolves.
Preparation method: Take a quantity of good-quality crushed barley, and five times that amount of pure, fresh water. Place it in a clean pot, and cook over a moderate fire until only one-fifth of the water remains. Then strain it and use the required amount, sweetened as needed.

Ibn Al-Qayyam wrote further:
وَإِذَا شِئْتَ أَنْ تَعْرِفَ فَضْلَ التَّلْبِينَةِ، فَاعْرِفْ فَضْلَ مَاءِ الشَّعِيرِ، بَلْ هِيَ مَاءُ الشَّعِيرِ لَهُمْ، فَإِنَّهَا حِسَاءٌ مُتَّخَذٌ مِنْ دَقِيقِ الشَّعِيرِ بِنُخَالَتِهِ، وَالْفَرْقُ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ مَاءِ الشَّعِيرِ أَنَّهُ يُطْبَخُ صِحَاحًا، وَالتَّلْبِينَةُ تُطْبَخُ من مَطْحُونًا، وَهِيَ أَنْفَعُ مِنْهُ لِخُرُوجِ خَاصِّيَّةِ الشَّعِيرِ بِالطَّحْنِ، وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَ أَنَّ لِلْعَادَاتِ تَأْثِيرًا فِي الِانْتِفَاعِ بِالْأَدْوِيَةِ وَالْأَغْذِيَةِ، وَكَانَتْ عَادَةُ الْقَوْمِ أَنْ يتخدوا مَاءَ الشَّعِيرِ مِنْهُ مَطْحُونًا لَا صِحَاحًا، وَهُوَ أَكْثَرُ تَغْذِيَةً، وَأَقْوَى فِعْلًا، وَأَعْظَمُ جَلَاءً، وَإِنَّمَا اتَّخَذَهُ أَطِبَّاءُ الْمُدُنِ مِنْهُ صِحَاحًا لِيَكُونَ أَرَقَّ وَأَلْطَفَ، فَلَا يَثْقُلُ عَلَى طَبِيعَةِ الْمَرِيضِ، وَهَذَا بِحَسَبِ طَبَائِعِ أَهْلِ الْمُدُنِ وَرَخَاوَتِهَا، وَثِقَلِ مَاءِ الشَّعِيرِ الْمَطْحُونِ عَلَيْهَا. وَالْمَقْصُودُ: أَنَّ مَاءَ الشَّعِيرِ مَطْبُوخًا صِحَاحًا يَنْفُذُ سَرِيعًا، وَيَجْلُو جَلَاءً ظَاهِرًا، وَيُغَذِّي غِذَاءً لَطِيفًا. وَإِذَا شُرِبَ حَارًّا كَانَ جَلَاؤُهُ أَقْوَى، وَنُفُوذُهُ أَسْرَعَ، وَإِنْمَاؤُهُ لِلْحَرَارَةِ الْغَرِيزِيَّةِ أَكْثَرَ، وَتَلْمِيسُهُ لِسُطُوحِ الْمَعِدَةِ أَوْفَقَ
“And if you wish to understand the virtue of Talbinah, then know the virtue of barley water. In fact, Talbinah is their version of barley water. It is a broth made from barley flour along with its bran. The difference between it and regular barley water is that barley water is made by cooking whole grains, while Talbinah is made by cooking ground barley. Talbinah is more beneficial than barley water because the special properties of barley are better released through grinding.
It has already been mentioned that habits affect the benefit gained from medicines and foods. The custom of those people (the Arabs) was to prepare barley water using ground barley, not whole grains, which makes it more nutritious, more potent in action, and better at cleansing. Physicians in cities, however, prepared it from whole (uncrushed) grains so it would be lighter and more subtle, and not too heavy for the nature of the sick. This was more suited to the soft temperaments of city dwellers, as they are more sensitive to the heaviness of ground barley water.
The point is that Barley water made with whole grains penetrates the body quickly, cleanses clearly, and provides gentle nourishment. When drunk warm, its cleansing effect is stronger, its penetration is quicker, its support for the innate bodily heat is greater, and its contact with the stomach lining is more harmonious.”
