THALJ (HAIL, ICE)
Explanation of ice by Ibn Al Qayyam is so tough to understand, please give it a try.
It is established in the authentic Hadith that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "O Allah, cleanse me of my sins with water, ice, and hail." This Hadith illustrates the principle that a disease is treated with its opposite. Sins possess a kind of heat and burning that is counteracted by ice, hail and cold water.
It should not be said that hot water is more effective in removing dirt, as cold water has properties that strengthen and solidify the body in ways that hot water does not. Sins result in two negative effects: filth and weakness. Therefore, what is needed is a treatment that cleanses the heart and solidifies it. Mentioning cold water, ice, and cold is indicative of these two aspects.
Moreover, ice is definitively cold; it is incorrect to say it is hot. Some may argue that its association with the birth of living creatures suggests heat, but this does not indicate its temperature. Many cold fruits and vinegar can also foster life. The thirst associated with ice is due to its stimulating effect on heat, not because it is inherently hot. Ice can be harmful to the stomach and nerves; however, if tooth pain arises from excessive heat, ice can provide relief.
Ibn al-Baytaar wrote : Snow and Ice: Ibn Sina noted that ice is detrimental for the elderly and those prone to cold humors. While it can alleviate the pain of hot toothaches, it is harmful to the nerves due to its ability to trap hot vapors and prevent their release. It also negatively affects the stomach, particularly for those who tend to have cold humors. Additionally, ice can cause thirst by accumulating heat.
Al-Razi stated that the quality of ice varies depending on the quality of the water it was made from; thus, ice made from superior water is better than that made from inferior water.
Ibn Masawayh suggested that water cooled with ice is preferable to ice itself. Those who are keen on consuming it should frequently visit the bathhouse, massage with orris oil and narcissus oil.
