اللَّهُمَّ إنِّي أسألُكَ صِحَّةً في إيمانٍ، وإيماناً في حُسْنِ خُلُقٍ، ونَجَاةً يَتْبَعُهَا فَلاحٌ، ورَحْمَةً مِنكَ وعَافيةً ومَغْفِرةً مِنكَ ورَضْوَاناً
Prophet's Guidance on Beverages / Drinks
Ibn Al-Qayyam wrote :
وَأَمَّا هَدْيُهُ فِي الشَّرَابِ، فَمِنْ أَكْمَلِ هَدْيٍ يُحْفَظُ بِهِ الصِّحَّةُ، فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يَشْرَبُ الْعَسَلَ الْمَمْزُوجَ بِالْمَاءِ الْبَارِدِ، وَفِي هَذَا مِنْ حِفْظِ الصِّحَّةِ مَا لَا يَهْتَدِي إِلَى مَعْرِفَتِهِ إِلَّا أَفَاضِلُ الْأَطِبَّاءِ، فَإِنَّ شُرْبَهُ وَلَعْقَهُ عَلَى الرِّيقِ يُذِيبُ الْبَلْغَمَ، وَيَغْسِلُ خَمْلَ الْمَعِدَةِ، وَيَجْلُو لُزُوجَتَهَا، وَيَدْفَعُ عَنْهَا الْفَضَلَاتِ، وَيُسَخِّنُهَا بِاعْتِدَالٍ، وَيَفْتَحُ سَدَدَهَا، وَيَفْعَلُ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ بِالْكَبِدِ وَالْكُلَى وَالْمَثَانَةِ، وَهُوَ أَنْفَعُ لِلْمَعِدَةِ مِنْ كُلِّ حُلْوٍ دَخَلَهَا، وَإِنَّمَا يَضُرُّ بِالْعَرَضِ لِصَاحِبِ الصَّفْرَاءِ لِحِدَّتِهِ وَحِدَّةِ الصَّفْرَاءِ، فَرُبَّمَا هَيَّجَهَا، وَدَفْعُ مَضَرَّتِهِ لَهُمْ بِالْخَلِّ، فَيَعُودُ حِينَئِذٍ لَهُمْ نَافِعًا جِدًّا، وَشُرْبُهُ أَنْفَعُ مِنْ كَثِيرٍ مِنَ الْأَشْرِبَةِ الْمُتَّخَذَةِ مِنَ السُّكَّرِ أَوْ أَكْثَرِهَا، وَلَا سِيَّمَا لِمَنْ لَمْ يَعْتَدْ هَذِهِ الْأَشْرِبَةَ، وَلَا أَلِفَهَا طَبْعُهُ، فَإِنَّهُ إِذَا شَرِبَهَا لَا تُلَائِمُهُ مُلَاءَمَةَ الْعَسَلِ، وَلَا قَرِيبًا مِنْهُ، وَالْمُحَكَّمُ فِي ذَلِكَ الْعَادَةُ، فَإِنَّهَا تَهْدِمُ أُصُولًا، وَتَبْنِي أُصُولًا
As for the guidance of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم in drinking, it was of the most perfect manner, preserving health. He would drink honey mixed with cold water, which has health benefits that only the best of physicians would understand. Drinking it on an empty stomach dissolves phlegm, cleanses the stomach lining, removes its stickiness, clears out residues, warms the stomach moderately, opens its blockages, and provides similar benefits to the liver, kidneys, and bladder. It is more beneficial for the stomach than any other sweet substance it receives.
Honey only causes harm to those with a surplus of yellow bile due to its heat combined with the bile’s heat, which may trigger an aggravation. To mitigate this effect, vinegar (with Honey) can be added to water ~ a drink called Sakanjabeen, making it highly beneficial for them. Drinking honey is also more advantageous than most drinks made with sugar, especially for those not accustomed to such sugary drinks. When they try it, these drinks do not suit them as honey does, or even can’t come closer.
As for beverages that combine sweetness and coolness, they are among the most beneficial things for the body, one of the greatest ways to maintain health, and they greatly benefit the soul, vitality, liver, and heart. These elements have a strong affinity and reliance on such a drink. When both properties are present (sweetness and coolness), it provides nourishment, facilitates food absorption, and efficiently delivers sustenance to all the organs.
Cold water, in particular, is moist and quenches heat, preserving the body's natural moisture, replenishing what has been lost, softening food, and helping it flow through the veins.
Physicians disagree on whether water nourishes the body. Some assert it does, based on observable signs of growth, strength, and bodily increase from drinking water, especially when there is a need for it.
When a person is refreshed by cool water, his strength, energy, and movement returns; enabling them to go without food and benefit from a minimal amount of it. Meanwhile, a thirsty person gains no benefit or strength from even a large quantity of food, nor does it nourish him.
When water is cold and mixed with something sweetening, such as honey, raisins, dates, or sugar, it becomes one of the most beneficial substances for the body and preserves one's health. This is why the cold sweet drink was the most beloved to the Messenger of Allah, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم. On the other hand, lukewarm water has adverse effects and acts contrary to these benefits.
When the water that has been left to sit (ماء بَائِت) is more beneficial than that which is drunk at the time of its freshness. Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said upon entering the garden of Abu Al-Haitham ibn Al-Taihan:
قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَدْ دَخَلَ إِلَى حَائِطِ أَبِي الْهَيْثَمِ بْنِ التَّيِّهَانِ: هَلْ مِنْ مَاءٍ بَاتَ فِي شَنَّةٍ؟» فَأَتَاهُ بِهِ، فَشَرِبَ مِنْهُ، رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ وَلَفْظُهُ: إِنْ كَانَ عِنْدَكَ مَاءٌ بَاتَ فِي شَنَّةٍ وَإِلَّا كَرَعْنَا (أخرجه البخاري في الأشربة)
"Is there any water that has been left to sit in a container?" They brought him some, and he drank from it. It has been mentioned that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, preferred the sweet water and chose which had been left to sit.
وَقَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُسْتَقَى لَهُ الْمَاءُ الْعَذْبُ مِنْ بِئْرِ السُّقْيَا (أخرجه أبو داود في الأشربة)
Aishah Radi Allaho Anha said: " Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم would ask for sweet water from the well of Suqya."
Water in leather pouches and containers is more pleasant than that which is in earthenware or stone vessels, especially in human-made containers. This is why Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم sought water that had been left to sit in leather pouches, unlike other containers. The water when placed in such pouches and human-made containers is especially delightful due to the swollen pores that allow water to seep out. Therefore, the water in a container that seeps is tastier than that which does not seep, and it is colder than that which does not seep.
May the blessings and peace of Allah be upon the most complete of creation, the noblest of them in soul, and the best of them in guidance in all matters. He has indeed guided his Ummah to the best and most beneficial matters for their hearts and bodies, in this world and the Hereafter.
قَالَتْ عائشة: كَانَ أَحَبُّ الشَّرَابِ إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم الْحُلْوَ الْبَارِدَ (أخرجه أحمد والترمذي في الجامع)
Aishah Radi Allaho Anha said: "The sweetest and coldest drink was the most beloved to Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم." This may refer to fresh water, such as that from sweet springs and wells, as he would ask for sweet water. It is also possible that it refers to water mixed with honey or that which has been soaked with dates or raisins.
It could be said and this is the more apparent interpretation, that it encompasses both types.
It has been narrated in a Hadith by Ibn Umar that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم forbade us from drinking while lying on our stomachs, and he also prohibited us from scooping with one hand, saying:
لَا يَلَغْ أَحَدُكُمْ كَمَا يَلَغُ الْكَلْبُ، وَلَا يَشْرَبْ بِاللَّيْلِ مِنْ إِنَاءٍ حَتَّى يَخْتَبِرَهُ إِلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ مُخَمَّرًا (أخرجه ابن ماجه في الأشربة)
"Let none of you drink as a dog drinks; and do not drink at night from a vessel until you examine it, unless it has been sealed."
Drinking water while seated
It was part of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم practice to drink while seated; this was his usual manner. It has been reported authentically that he prohibited drinking while standing, and it has been reported that he instructed someone who drank while standing to induce vomiting. It is also reported that he drank while standing.
Some scholars said this is a contradiction to the prohibition, while others said it merely clarifies that the prohibition is not for absolute prohibition but for guidance and leaving the better option. There are also those who believe there is no contradiction at all, as he only drank while standing out of necessity. This was when he came to Zamzam, and people were drawing water from it. He was given the bucket, so he drank while standing, and this was a situation of necessity.
Drinking while standing has many disadvantages, one of which is that it does not provide complete hydration, nor does it settle properly in the stomach.
The stomach does not properly distribute the drink to the organs, and it descends quickly and harshly into the stomach, which may cool its heat, disturb it, and cause the fluid to rush to the lower parts of the body without proper graduality. All of this is harmful to the drinker. However, if one does this rarely or out of necessity, it will not harm them.
Drinking water in 3 separate breaths
وَفِي صَحِيحِ مسلم مِنْ حَدِيثِ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَتَنَفَّسُ فِي الشَّرَابِ ثَلَاثًا، وَيَقُولُ: إِنَّهُ أَرْوَى وَأَمْرَأُ وَأَبْرَأُ (أخرجه مسلم في الأشربة)
In "Sahih Muslim," from the Hadith of Anas bin Malik, it is reported that the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم would breathe in his drink three times and would say: "Indeed, it is more satisfying, more pleasing, and more healing."
In the terminology of the Shari'ah and its scholars, "drink" refers to water. The meaning of breathing in the drink is that he would remove the cup from his mouth and breathe outside, then return to the drink, as clearly stated in another Hadith:
إِذَا شَرِبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلَا يَتَنَفَّسْ فِي الْقَدَحِ، وَلَكِنْ لِيُبِنِ الْإِنَاءَ عَنْ فِيهِ (أخرجه ابن ماجه من حديث رواه الحارث بن أبي ذئاب عن عمه عن أبي هريرة)
"When one of you drinks, let him not breathe into the cup, but let him remove the vessel from his mouth."
This manner of drinking has numerous wisdoms and significant benefits, which Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم pointed out by saying: "Indeed, it is more satisfying, more pleasing, and more healing."
"More satisfying" refers to a greater level of quenching thirst; "more pleasing" indicates that it is more delightful and beneficial, and "more healing" means it is more effective in alleviating thirst and its ailments by allowing the drink to reach the inflamed stomach gradually. The second sip will soothe what the first sip could not, and the third sip will soothe what the second sip could not. Additionally, this method is safer for the stomach's heat and preserves its warmth, rather than allowing cold liquid to flood in all at once.
Moreover, this approach does not merely quench the thirst momentarily, only to be followed by the cessation of drinking. If the drink is interrupted, it will not be entirely negated, unlike the situation where one drinks hastily without taking time to sip and pace oneself.
Furthermore, it is safer in the long term and more secure against the danger of consuming a large quantity all at once. This is because there is a fear that it may extinguish the natural heat due to its excessive coldness and quantity, or weaken it, which could lead to the corruption of the balance in the stomach and liver, resulting in serious illnesses. This is particularly concerning for those living in hot climates, such as the Hejaaz and Yemen, or during hot seasons, such as the height of summer. Drinking all at once is very dangerous for them because the natural heat is weak in the bodies of people living there and during those hot times.
And when Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said "more pleasing," it means more beneficial and agreeable when food or drink enters the body, mixing with ease, pleasure, and benefit. Hence, the saying:
فَكُلُوهُ هَنِيئاً مَرِيئاً (النساء- ٤)
"Eat well and drink well," refers to having a good outcome and being pleasing in taste. It is also said that it means it flows more quickly down the throat due to its ease and lightness, unlike a large quantity, which does not flow down the throat easily.
One of the drawbacks of drinking all at once is the risk of choking due to the overwhelming amount, which could block the passage of the drink, causing one to gag. If one breathes slowly and then drinks, he is safe from this.
Among its benefits is that when a person drinks for the first time, the hot vapor that was in the heart and liver rises due to the introduction of cold water, and nature expels it. When one drinks again, the cold water descends while the vapor rises, and they clash and interact. This interaction can lead to coughing and choking, and the drinker does not fully enjoy the water, nor does it satisfy their thirst completely.
وَقَدْ رَوَى عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، والبيهقي، وَغَيْرُهُمَا عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِذَا شَرِبَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَمُصَّ الْمَاءَ مَصًّا، وَلَا يَعُبَّ عَبًّا، فَإِنَّهُ مِنَ الْكُبَادِ (أخرجه الطبراني في الصغير وابن السي وأبو نعيم في الطب، والبيهقي في شعب الإيمان)
Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak, al-Bayhaqi, and others narrated from Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم: "When one of you drinks, let him sip the water gently, and not gulp it, for it causes pain to the liver."
And “Kubaad” means liver pain. It has been proven by experience that a large amount of water entering the liver all at once causes pain and weakens its heat. The reason for this is the opposition between its heat and the coldness and quantity of what has been introduced. If the water was to be introduced gradually, bit by bit, it would not oppose its heat, nor would it weaken it. An example of this is pouring cold water into a pot gradually.
وَقَدْ رَوَى الترمذي فِي جَامِعِهِ عَنْهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: لَا تَشْرَبُوا نَفَسًا وَاحِدًا كَشُرْبِ الْبَعِيرِ، وَلَكِنِ اشْرَبُوا مَثْنَى وَثُلَاثَ، وَسَمُّوا إِذَا أَنْتُمْ شَرِبْتُمْ وَاحْمَدُوا إِذَا أَنْتُمْ فَرَغْتُمْ
Al-Tirmidhi narrated in his Jami from Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم "Do not drink in one breath like a camel, but drink in two or three sips, and mention the name of Allah when you drink, and praise Him when you finish."
There is a remarkable effect of mentioning Allah's name at the beginning of food and drink, and thanking Him at the end, in enhancing its benefits and enjoyment, and in warding off harm.
Imam Ahmad said: "When food is gathered in four ways, it is complete: when the name of Allah is mentioned at the beginning, when Allah is praised at the end, when many hands are involved in it, and when it is from lawful sources."
Covering Pots and closing water skins
Al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih from the Hadith of Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said:
وَقَدْ رَوَى مسلم فِي صَحِيحِهِ : مِنْ حَدِيثِ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يقول: غَطُّوا الْإِنَاءَ، وَأَوْكُوا السِّقَاءَ، فَإِنَّ فِي السَّنَةِ لَيْلَةً يَنْزِلُ فِيهَا وَبَاءٌ لَا يَمُرُّ بِإِنَاءٍ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ غِطَاءٌ، أَوْ سِقَاءٍ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ وِكَاءٌ إِلَّا وَقَعَ فِيهِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الدَّاءِ (أخرجه مسلم في الأشربة، والامام أحمد)
I heard the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم say: "Cover the vessel and tie the water skin, for in the year there is a night when a plague descends, and it does not pass by any vessel that is not covered or any water skin that is not tied, except that it falls into it from that disease."
This is something that the knowledge of physicians and their understanding cannot reach. Those who have experienced it have recognized it.
It is authentically reported that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم commanded to cover the vessel, even if a stick is placed over it.
وعن جابر رضي الله عنه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: "غطوا الإناء، وأوكئوا السقاء، وأغلقوا الأبواب، وأطفئوا السراج، فإن الشيطان لا يحل سقاء، ولايفتح بابًا ولايكشف إناءً، إن لم يجد أحدكم إلا أن يعرض على إنائه عودا، ويذكر اسم الله، فليفعل، فإن الفويسقة تضرم على أهل البيت بيتهم" (رواه مسلم) "الفويسقة: الفأرة، و"تضرم": تحرق.
Jabir (May Allah be pleased with him) said: Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said, "Cover up the (kitchen) containers (i.e., pots, pans, etc.), tie up the mouth of the water-skin, lock up the doors and extinguish the lamps, because Sheytaan can neither untie the water-skin nor open the door nor uncover the containers. If one can cover the cooking pot even by placing a piece of wood across it, and pronounce the Name of Allah on it, let him do it. A mouse can sometimes cause a house to burn along its dwellers." (Muslim, Riyad as-Salihin 1654)
The wisdom in placing the stick over the pot is that it will remind the person to cover it. Moreover, it is a possibility that a creeping thing intends to fall into it and passes over the stick, so the stick acts as a bridge preventing it from falling into the vessel.
It is authentically reported that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم commanded that when tying the vessel, one should mention the name of Allah, for mentioning Allah's name when covering the vessel drives away the Sheytaan, and tying it drives away creeping creatures. This is why he commanded to mention Allah's name in these two situations for these two reasons.
Drinking from the mouth of the water skin is not allowed
وَرَوَى الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي صَحِيحِهِ مِنْ حَدِيثُ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنِ الشُّرْبِ مِنْ فِي السِّقَاءِ (أخرجه البخاري في الأشربة)
Bukhari narrated in his Sahih from the Hadith of Ibn Abbas that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم prohibited drinking directly from the mouth of the water skin.
In this, there are numerous etiquettes, including that the exhalation of the drinker in it gives it an unpleasant odor that people might avoid because of it. Furthermore, there might be an animal inside that he is unaware of, which could harm him. Moreover, the water might contain impurities or other substances that he cannot see when drinking, which could enter his stomach. Also, drinking this way fills the stomach with air, which could prevent it from taking its share of water, crowd it, or cause discomfort, among other wisdoms.
Drinking from a chipped cup is not allowed
وَفِي سُنَنِ أبي داود مِنْ حَدِيثِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، قَالَ: نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الشُّرْبِ مِنْ ثُلْمَةِ الْقَدَحِ، وَأَنْ يَنْفُخَ فِي الشَّرَابِ (أخرجه أبو داود في الأشربة)
In Sunan Abu Dawood, from the Hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, he said: " Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم prohibited drinking from the chipped side of the cup and blowing into the drink."
This is among the etiquettes that ensure the benefit of the drinker, as drinking from the chipped side of the cup has several disadvantages:
- First: Anything that is on the surface of the water, such as dirt or others, accumulates at the chipped side, unlike the clean side of the cup.
- Second: It may confuse the drinker, preventing him from drinking properly from the chipped side.
- Third: Dirt and odor can gather at the chipped side, which cannot be cleaned effectively.
- Fourth: The chipped side is the part of the cup that is flawed and is the worst place on it; thus, it should be avoided, and one should aim for the clean side. For anything that is inferior, there is no goodness in it. Some of the predecessors saw a man buying something of poor quality and said: "Do not do this; do you not know that Allah has removed blessings from everything that is inferior?"
- Fifth: There may be a crack or an imperfection at the chipped side that could injure the mouth of the drinker, among other disadvantages.
As for blowing into the drink, it imparts an unpleasant odor from the mouth of the blower, which is often avoided. This is especially true if the mouth is foul. In general, the breath of the blower mixes with the drink, and this is why Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم prohibited both breathing into the container and blowing into it. This prohibition is mentioned in a Hadith reported by Al-Tirmidhi and authenticated, in which Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
رَوَاهُ الترمذي وَصَحَّحَهُ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يُتَنَفَّسَ فِي الْإِنَاءِ، أَوْ يُنْفَخَ فِيهِ
" Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم forbade breathing (while drinking) into the container or blowing into it."
Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم drank milk undiluted or mixed with water
وَكَانَ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَشْرَبُ اللَّبَنَ خَالِصًا تَارَةً، وَمَشُوبًا بِالْمَاءِ أُخْرَى. وَفِي شُرْبِ اللَّبَنِ الْحُلْوِ فِي تِلْكَ الْبِلَادِ الْحَارَّةِ خَالِصًا وَمَشُوبًا نَفْعٌ عَظِيمٌ فِي حِفْظِ الصِّحَّةِ، وَتَرْطِيبُ الْبَدَنِ، وَرِيُّ الْكَبِدِ، وَلَا سِيَّمَا اللَّبَنَ الَّذِي تَرْعَى دَوَابُّهُ الشِّيحَ وَالْقَيْصُومَ وَالْخُزَامَى وَمَا أَشْبَهَهَا، فَإِنَّ لَبَنَهَا غِذَاءٌ مَعَ الْأَغْذِيَةِ، وَشَرَابٌ مَعَ الْأَشْرِبَةِ، وَدَوَاءٌ مَعَ الْأَدْوِيَةِ وَفِي جَامِعِ الترمذي عَنْهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ طَعَامًا فَلْيَقُلْ: اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فيه، فأطعمنا خَيْرًا مِنْهُ وَإِذَا سُقِيَ لَبَنًا فَلْيَقُلْ: اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ، وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ، فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ شيء يجزىء، مِنَ الطَّعَامِ وَالشَّرَابِ إِلَّا اللَّبَنُ» . قَالَ الترمذي: هذا حديث حسن (أخرجه الترمذي في الدعوات، وأبو داود والامام أحمد، والبيهقي في شعب الايمان، وابن ماجة)
Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم would sometimes drink pure milk and at other times drink milk mixed with water. Drinking sweet milk in those hot regions, whether pure or mixed, has great benefits for maintaining health, hydrating the body, and cooling the liver. This is especially true for milk from animals that graze on herbs like Sheeh (Mugwort), Qaysoum (a type of Artemisia), and Khuzami (Lavender), as their milk serves as nourishment alongside food, a refreshing drink, and a remedy with medicinal properties.
In Tirmidhi, it is narrated from Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم “When one of you eats food, let him say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and provide us with something better than it.' And when he is given milk to drink, let him say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and increase us from it, for there is nothing that can substitute for food and drink except milk.”
Drinking Nabeez
وَثَبَتَ فِي صَحِيحِ مسلمأَنَّهُ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُنْبَذُ لَهُ أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ، وَيَشْرَبُهُ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ يَوْمَهُ ذَلِكَ، وَاللَّيْلَةَ الَّتِي تَجِيءُ، وَالْغَدَ، وَاللَّيْلَةَ الْأُخْرَى، وَالْغَدَ إِلَى الْعَصْرِ، فَإِنْ بَقِيَ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ سَقَاهُ الْخَادِمَ، أَوْ أَمَرَ بِهِ فَصُبَّ (أخرجه مسلم في الأشربة) وَهَذَا النَّبِيذُ: هُوَ مَا يُطْرَحُ فِيهِ تَمْرٌ يُحَلِّيهِ، وَهُوَ يَدْخُلُ فِي الْغِذَاءِ وَالشَّرَابِ، وَلَهُ نَفْعٌ عَظِيمٌ فِي زِيَادَةِ الْقُوَّةِ، وَحِفْظِ الصِّحَّةِ
It has been established in "Sahih Muslim" that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم would have Nabeez prepared for him at the beginning of the night and would drink it when he woke up on that day, as well as on the coming night, the next day, and the following night until the afternoon. If there was anything left, he would have the servant drink it or would instruct that it be poured out (wasted).
This beverage, known as Nabeez, is made by placing dates in water to sweeten it, and it serves as both food and drink. It has great benefits for increasing strength and maintaining health.
Nabeez mentioned in this Hadith is the drink that is made with dates or raisins that are soaked in water; to sweeten the water and it is used both in drinks and foods. Nabeez has a great benefit in strengthening the body and preserving the health. Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam did not drink the Nabeez that was more than three days old; fearing that it might have started to decompose and become intoxicating.
